Sustainability is not only about recycling. It is also about creating opportunities for people and communities.
Recently, Hara Makers had the opportunity to share our experience with students at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) in a session on sustainability and social entrepreneurship.
The session explored how plastic waste can be transformed into useful products while creating skills and income opportunities for communities.
Turning Waste into Opportunity
Through our Reimagine Plastic Project, discarded plastic is collected, cleaned and prepared for upcycling. With the right skills and processes, these materials can be transformed into useful products such as bags, pouches and accessories.
But the impact goes beyond the products.
Our programmes also provide opportunities for people from lower-income communities to learn practical skills, participate in production and earn an income.
Sustainability with a Social Purpose
For Hara Makers, sustainability means looking at both environmental and social impact.
We believe that addressing plastic waste can also create opportunities for people to learn, participate and build new skills.
This is where sustainability meets social entrepreneurship.
It is about asking not only:
“How can we reduce waste?”
but also:
“How can we create opportunities while doing so?”
Inspiring the Next Generation
Engaging with students is another important part of our work.
By sharing our experiences, we hope to encourage young people to see sustainability as an opportunity for innovation, entrepreneurship and positive community impact.
There is no single solution to the plastic waste challenge. Upcycling is just one part of a bigger journey towards more responsible consumption and a circular economy.
At Hara Makers, we continue to Reimagine Plastic while creating opportunities for people and communities along the way.
Because sustainability is not just about what we do with waste. It is also about the people we empower through the process.
