River clean-up #209 l Sungai Keroh

by haramakers

Yesterday , 30 people from UEM Sunrise showed up.

Not for a meeting. Not for a photo-op.

But to stand by a river, and face what we usually choose not to see.

By the end of the day, this is what the river gave back:
Plastic: 108.6 kg
Fabric: 89.6 kg
Metal / Tin / Aluminium: 9.5 kg
Glass / Ceramic: 3 kg
E-waste: 0.7 kg
Masks / Diapers: 6.3 kg
Mixed waste: 21.5 kg
Wood: 0.7 kg
Total: 239.9 kg of waste.

Removed by human hands. In one morning.

What stays with us isn’t just the weight,

it’s the texture of it.

Sun-bleached plastics tangled with fabric.

Everyday items that were useful for minutes,

but stayed in the river for years.

This cleanup wasn’t about “saving the river” in a day.

It was about slowing the harm, bearing witness,

and understanding that pollution is not abstract,

it’s physical, heavy, and very real.

Thank you to the team from UEM Sunrise for stepping in, getting uncomfortable, and doing the work.

This is what responsibility looks like, not perfect, but present.

The river is still flowing.

So is the work. 🌊💚
