POS Malaysia × Hara Makers: Repurposing Event Banners into 1,000 Mini Tote Bags
Sustainability is often framed around recycling or replacing materials. But sometimes, the most responsible choice is simpler: use what already exists, and extend its life as thoughtfully as possible.
That was the approach behind our recent collaboration with Pos Malaysia Berhad, where Hara Makers repurposed post-event banners into 1,000 mini tote bags through our community-based Buy-Back Programme.
Instead of treating waste as something to discard or overpromising it as a perfect “solution”, this project focused on careful, practical reuse. The goal was straightforward: manage unavoidable materials responsibly, minimise further harm, and create meaningful social value along the way.
Project Overview: Extending the Life of Existing Materials
Event banners are durable by design, but once an event ends, they often become difficult to recycle due to mixed materials and coatings. Many end up stored, incinerated, or landfilled.
Rather than letting this happen, POS Malaysia chose a more accountable path.
Together, we transformed these used banners into functional mini tote bags everyday items that extend the material’s lifespan and reduce the need for new resources.
By repurposing instead of discarding, the project demonstrated how responsible reuse and waste reduction can be integrated directly into corporate operations and ESG practices.
From Banner to Bag: A Hands-On Process
Each tote bag began as a banner that had already served its purpose.
The materials were carefully prepared through a manual, small-batch process:
- washing and cleaning
- cutting into usable panels
- measuring and patterning
- sewing and assembling
- quality checking
No heavy industrial processing. No complex recycling claims.
Just thoughtful craftsmanship that gives materials a second, useful life.
Every bag carries traces of its past — unique prints, textures, and colours — making each piece one of a kind.
Community Impact: Work with Dignity and Purpose
Behind every tote bag is a person.
Production was carried out by seven women from the PPR community, who handled the full process from start to finish. Through this collaboration, they gained:
- paid, short-term income
- practical sewing and upcycling skills
- safe, community-based work
- hands-on production experience
For many participants, these projects provide more than earnings. They create opportunities to learn, contribute, and build confidence through meaningful work.
At Hara Makers, we believe sustainability must be human-centred. Environmental responsibility should go hand in hand with social empowerment.
A Grounded Approach to Waste Management
At Hara Makers, we’re careful about the language we use.
We do not position upcycling or reuse as permanent solutions to plastic or material waste. Nor do we claim neutrality or “circular perfection.”
Instead, we focus on what is realistic and responsible.
This means:
- working only with materials that already exist
- extending material life where possible
- managing waste transparently
- acknowledging the limits of reuse
This grounded approach avoids greenwashing and keeps the focus on practical accountability.
Because sometimes, the most honest form of sustainability is simply doing less harm and doing it better.
How the Buy-Back Programme Works
This project is part of our Buy-Back Programme, which supports organisations and corporates in taking responsibility for their own unavoidable waste.
Rather than outsourcing or discarding materials, partners can:
✔ Channel waste into small-scale reuse projects
✔ Convert materials into functional products
✔ Buy back items for internal use or distribution
✔ Track environmental and social impact
✔ Support community livelihoods directly
It’s not about claiming perfection, it’s about demonstrating accountability.
Why Responsible Reuse Matters
Collaborations like POS Malaysia × Hara Makers show that sustainability doesn’t always require new materials or complicated systems.
Sometimes it means:
- using what you already have
- reducing unnecessary waste
- supporting local communities
- and making intentional choices
By extending the life of existing banners, POS Malaysia reduced waste, created useful products, and contributed to meaningful community-based work all within a realistic, transparent framework.
That’s what responsible reuse looks like in practice.
