In a world overwhelmed by plastic pollution, upcycling has emerged as a creative and impactful solution. Rather than allowing plastic waste to end up in landfills or oceans, upcycling gives discarded materials a second life—turning them into practical, stylish, and meaningful products. Beyond environmental benefits, upcycling empowers communities, especially women, by providing new skills and sustainable income opportunities.
At Hara Makers, we believe in the magic of transformation—not just for waste but for people, too. Our upcycling initiatives are more than just about repurposing plastic; they are about rebuilding lives through handmade craftsmanship, financial independence, and sustainable creativity.
Spotlight on Women in Upcycling: Stories of Transformation

Kak Akisyah’s Journey with Hara Makers
Meet Kak Akisyah, a 45-year-old housewife from PPR Lembah Subang 2, whose journey with waste has completely transformed.
Before joining Hara Makers, recycling wasn’t something she thought about, waste was just waste. But through the programme, she discovered the value hidden in everyday discarded items. Now, she upcycles plastics and coffee grounds into useful products like candles, mosquito repellents, and bean bags, breathing new life into what would have otherwise been thrown away.
Of all the crafts she’s learned, candle-making is her favorite. She finds joy in the process, not just for its beauty but for the warmth and practicality it brings to a home.
But Kak Akisyah’s journey doesn’t stop at her own learning. She has become a community leader, actively involving her children in recycling and spreading awareness about waste reduction. While she doesn’t sew in our latest upcycling project, she plays a vital role in supporting other makers by collecting and donating plastics, proving that every small action contributes to something bigger.
Her story is a reminder that upcycling is more than just crafting, it’s a mindset shift, a movement toward sustainability, and an opportunity for women to grow, earn, and inspire change in their communities. (More Details)

From Waste to Worth: Kak Ana’s Journey in Upcycling with Hara Makers
Kak Ana Besut is a mother of six, a childcare provider, and a firm believer in making the most out of what we have. For the past seven years, she has called PPR Lembah Subang 2 home.
She was always aware of the impact of plastic waste, but it wasn’t until she joined Hara Makers that she truly saw its potential. What once seemed like trash became a resource, and through the program, she learned how to turn discarded plastics into beautiful, functional items like pencil cases and potluck bags.
Her favorite part? Sewing bags. Each stitch brings her a deep sense of satisfaction, knowing that she is not just creating something useful, but also making a difference—both for the planet and for her family.
Now, she doesn’t just upcycle plastics herself, she actively collects plastic waste and encourages her friends to do the same. She loves sharing her journey, inspiring others to recycle, and even inviting them to join Hara Makers—not just for fun, but as a way to earn extra income too.
For Kak Ana, Hara Makers is more than just a project. It’s a community, a purpose, and a daily source of joy. And we are so lucky to have her as part of our journey. (More Details)
