Celebrating Success: Hara Makers’ River Cleanup Milestones – 2024 Year-End Reflection

by haramakers

As 2024 draws to a close, we at Hara Makers are filled with gratitude and pride as we reflect on the milestones achieved in our mission to protect our rivers and communities from plastic pollution. Together with passionate volunteers, we’ve turned an ambitious dream into measurable impact, and it’s time to celebrate the incredible progress we’ve made this year.

A Year of Transformative Impact

In 2024, Hara Makers, alongside dedicated over 400 volunteers, successfully collected over 1,430 kg (1,422.67) kilograms of plastic waste from Sungai Keroh (KTM Segambut)! These cleanups not only restored the beauty and health of our waterways but also symbolized the power of collective action in combating one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time—plastic pollution.

Each cleanup event makes a tangible difference. From heavily polluted urban streams to scenic rivers marred by waste, the transformation has been inspiring. The results are visible in the clearer water, thriving ecosystems, and communities coming together to support a common cause.

Each cleanup contributes to meaningful change. From polluted urban streams to scenic rivers affected by waste, the progress has been heartening. The clearer water, thriving ecosystems, and stronger community bonds are small but vital steps toward a healthier environment.

What Happens to the Trash Collected from the River?

After being pulled out of the waterway, the trash collected from the river is carefully segregated by volunteers. Recyclable and non-recyclable items are sorted and sent to a local waste collection center. The recyclable materials are then handed over to the trash picker community we collaborate with, who ensure the items are properly recycled. This process not only helps divert waste from landfills but also provides a small source of income for the community, contributing to their livelihoods.

Celebrating Volunteer Heroes

None of this would have been possible without our amazing volunteers. And over 400 volunteers joined us throughout the year! Their hard work, enthusiasm, and commitment have been the driving force behind our success. To all the individuals, families, and groups who joined us in 2024, thank you for being the change-makers who inspire us every day.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As we celebrate our milestones, we’re also looking ahead. The fight against plastic pollution continues, and we’re excited to expand our cleanup initiatives, engage more communities, and upcycle even more waste into meaningful products.

Let’s carry this momentum into the new year! Together, we can amplify our efforts and create even greater impact. Stay tuned for upcoming events, and join us in making 2025 another year of environmental triumphs.
