100 Upcycled Name Card Holders for ASEAN Children and Youth Climate Summit 2025
At Hara Makers, we believe that sustainability is not just about reducing waste, it’s about creating opportunities, restoring dignity, and building inclusive communities.
That belief came to life through our recent collaboration with UNICEF, where we produced 100 upcycled name card holders for participants of the ASEAN Children and Youth Climate Summit 2025.
What began as discarded plastic became meaningful, functional items and more importantly, a pathway to income and skills for women from underserved communities.
Project Overview
For this, Hara Makers transformed 1.4 kg of plastic waste into practical, handcrafted name card holders used by young climate leaders across the region.
While the products were small in size, the impact behind them was significant.
Every piece represented:
- Waste diverted from landfills
- Hands-on skill development
- Fair income opportunities
- A story of environmental and social change
By choosing upcycled products, UNICEF demonstrated how events can reduce their environmental footprint while directly supporting communities.
From Waste to Workmanship
Behind each name card holder is a careful, hands-on process.
The journey begins with collecting and cleaning used plastic materials. The plastic is then sorted, washed, and cut into usable pieces before being fused into durable sheets. From there, our artisans measure, sew, and finish each holder by hand, followed by quality checks to ensure every piece is sturdy and event-ready.
But this project wasn’t just about manufacturing.
It was about:
- learning new techniques
- gaining confidence
- building craftsmanship
- and earning steady income
For the 10 women involved, each stitch represented growth, not only in skill, but in independence.
What others see as waste, these women see as potential.
Small Products, Big Meaning
At a climate summit that gathered passionate young leaders advocating for environmental solutions, these upcycled name card holders carried a deeper message.
They served as a tangible reminder that sustainability starts with everyday choices.
Instead of producing new materials, the event chose to:
- reuse what already exists
- reduce resource consumption
- support circular practices
- empower local communities
It’s proof that even simple items — like a name card holder — can reflect strong environmental values.
Impact Beyond the Event
Collaborations like this go far beyond the event day.
They create lasting ripple effects.
Environmental Impact
- Plastic waste diverted from landfill
- Reduced demand for virgin plastic
- Promotion of circular economy practices
Social Impact
- Income opportunities for lower-income women
- Skill development and training
- Increased confidence and financial independence
Organisational Impact
- Visible ESG outcomes
- Meaningful sustainability storytelling
- Responsible sourcing for events and gifting
By integrating upcycled products into their programme, UNICEF helped demonstrate how sustainability can be human-centred and inclusive not just operational.
